Why visit Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater (260 km² caldera floor) is known for the highest density of predators in Africa within a single, self-contained caldera. Wildlife regularly seen here includes black rhino, lion, hyena, flamingo, elephant.
When to go
The best time to visit is year-round, driest and clearest June to October.
For seasonal planning, read our Great Migration month-by-month guide or compare available Tanzania safari tours.
Wildlife & Ecology
The crater floor is one of the few places in Tanzania where black rhino can still reliably be seen, alongside a dense, largely non-migratory population of lion, hyena, elephant and buffalo confined within the caldera's 2,000-foot walls. A soda lake on the crater floor draws flamingos in their thousands during the wetter months.
Getting There
The crater sits roughly 180km (2.5–3 hours by road) west of Arusha via Karatu. Access to the crater floor itself is via a single steep descent road, with vehicle numbers capped by a daily quota system — most lodges book crater descent slots in advance.
